Flat/Matte
What is Flat Paint?Flat paint has more pigment than any other finish, which is why it’s also known as concealer paint—it’s also called matte paint. It’s completely non-reflective, so the paint will soak up any light directed at it. Flat paint tends to be easier to apply than other finishes, and it also usually a less expensive option. When should I be using flat paint? You should be using flat paint on walls and areas that have a lot of bumps, scratches, or holes. Sinceit can conceal these blemishes easily, it’ll be the one paint finish you’ll want to be using. It’s best for low-traffic roomsthat have a ton of light like offices and more formal rooms, like dining rooms. Egg ShellEggshell is a paint sheen, or gloss, that looks and feels somewhat flat but with a slight gloss to it. Eggshell paint is between matte (or flat) and satin paint sheens.Eggshell paint reflects more light than matte to produce a low luster. This low luster pulls out more of the paint’s color than a flat sheen and it gives the room a soft glow. Because eggshell paint has a slight gloss, it is easier tomaintain than matte or flat paint. When to use Egg-Shell?If any paint sheen can be called universal, it would be eggshell. Along with its closest sibling, satin, eggshell is the one to pick if you have to use it for the walls on nearly every interior surface. In fact, except for the ceiling, nosurface is wrong for eggshell sheen paint.
SatinMost homeowners shopping for paint know that color is important, but it’s easy to overlook paint gloss: Picking the right type of paint gloss, or sheen, is just as important as picking the right color when buying paint.Satin paint has long been a favorite gloss level for do-it-yourselfers becauseit is simple to apply and dries moderately quickly. Satin paint holds its own as an easy-to-clean, durable sheen that lets the paint’s color fully show through. This highly versatile paint gloss is used on both large surfaces like walls and on details like trim—keep reading to learn more about what satin paint is, where it’s best used, and more.

Semi-GlossWhat is semi-gloss paint?Semi-gloss is often most compared to a satin finish, but has much more sheen than the latter. That means light from windows and lamps will bounce off semi-gloss paint more easily than than a flatter finish, like eggshell or satin.Where should I use semi-gloss paint?Semi-gloss paint is perfect for rooms where moisture, drips, and grease stains often end up on the walls—like your kitchen or bathroom. It’s durable paint and can be easily scrubbed clean of any imperfections due to its high level of sheen—which also makes it the perfect choice for kids’ bedrooms and playrooms. It’s also often the chosen finish for the trimmings of your home, like mantels, stair railings, cabinetry, and crown molding because that sheen will really make these architectural elements pop. The finish also works well with a light color when trying to make a dark space look brighter.

Taralli
Nonna Silvia Recipe•4 cups all-purpose flour (Double Zero) ½ teaspoon fine sea salt, divided•¾ cup olive oil ¾ cup dry white wineCombine flour, ¼ teaspoon salt, oil, and wine in a stand mixer. Mix ingredients using the paddle attachment until a ball forms. Switch to the dough hook and knead dough for 10 minutes. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bring a large pot of water to boil over high heat and add the remaining salt. Spread a large, clean cloth out on a counter or table. Pinch off a walnut-sized piece of dough once kneading has finished. Roll dough piece into a snake about 2 ½ inches long. Form a tear drop shape, lightly pressing the two ends together to seal them into a ring. Repeat with remaining dough. Turn down the boiling water to a low boil. Drop taralli into the water a few at a time. Do not stir; they will sink at first, then begin to float. Remove floating taralli with a slotted spoon. Place them on the clean cloth and continue until all the taralli have boiled and are drained on the cloth. Place them on the prepared baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake in the preheated oven until taralli are golden and firm on the outside, but still soft on the inside, about 40 minutes. Cool completely and rest for at least 1 hour before serving. Wrap with a clean cloth or place in a paper bag; store at room temperature for up to 1 week.
