Minist er’s Lett er Tha t’s Easter to me… What are t he mem ories of the tas tes, the smells and the scenes of the special times in your life? At Christmas, for me it’s the smell of the tree in the lounge room. We always buy a fres h one each year rather than put up an arti fi cial tree. Th e per vading scent o f pine (o r fi r) means that Christmas has tr uly and fi nally arrived, no matter how many weeks the seasonal music has been playing in the shops . Summer has never truly arrived for me, until I’ve been able t o get the BBQ out of the garage and I’ve cooked s ome sa usages a nd chops and unhurriedly eaten them ar ound the patio table; the smell o f the BBQ, the sound of the meat sizzling, the relaxi ng company a nd the sound of t he bir ds. It is all relatively simple, but brings back and makes new memories, spe cial mem ories . Every two o r three years we used t o let a holiday apartment near the shore of Lake Constance i n Germany. Onc e we’ve a rrive d an d m oved the suitc ase up t he st airs t o t he third fl oor, we wandered down to the Italian ice cream shop near the lake a nd bought a scoop or three. Then w e h eade d do wn a nd sat on the bench and stare across the lake t o the other side, hearing the water ge ntly lapping, licking our ice cream, and I was truly on ho lida y. And what is Easter t o me? I guess it ’s t he taste of a hot cross bun. It used to be the taste o f chocolate but now I’m diabet ic, I have to be very careful. If t he wea ther is good, it’s the early morning s itt ing out the
bac k with a hot co ff e e wa rming my hands , listening to the early morning sounds and watching the early mornin g light playing on the spring leaves and buds. And singing to myself one of the great Easter hymns. I acknowledge that Jesus is risen. I s oon ha ve t o head o ff t o take a service in a church around the pa stor ate, but it’s these moments t hat linger a nd inst ruc t me. Every year I am trans fi xed and transformed, and forc efully r eminded tha t Jesus brings new life even i n the most lifeless of places . It’s a story t hat ne eds to be told a nd c an be easily dismissed in the worl d that w e liv e in. And each year I a m overwhe lmed by how unbelievable the story is. The sheer auda city o f wha t is proclaimed. Fo r He is risen! Death is defeated! New life abounds! And that really i s Easter t o me . Rev David R ees

Pause for Thought
In 1990, as NASA’s Voyager 1 sp acecraft was about to leave the solar system, Carl Sagan a member of the mission’s imaging team asked that the camera be turned around to take one la st look back at Eart h. The image it captured of our world, as a speck less than 0.12pixels in size, became known as ‘the pale blue dot’. In his book, published in 1994, Carl Sagan wrote: “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to d eal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.” Carl Sagan (1934-1996), Pale blue dot: a vision of the human fu ture in spa ce (1994)
