We were very pleased to see another healthy crop of entries in these awards this year. We believe that this highlights the increasing global use of FIDIC contracts and the influence and high regard in which they are held in the global construction sector. FIDIC contracts continue to play a key role in the delivery of international construction contracts and we are delighted to recognise that role in these awards this evening. Now in their sixth year, the FIDIC Contract Users’ Awards are now firmly established as an important part of the international construction contract community’s global events calendar. The awards also provide an opportunity for the global contract user community to come together to celebrate excellence and discuss the latest developments in this important field. We are delighted to be with you this evening to celebrate excellence, good practice and the achievements of our industry. We all work in a brilliant industry that makes a positive impact on so many people’s lives and it is right that we highlight our collective successes with this year’s awards. A big thank you to all those who entered the awards this year and also massive thanks too for the work of our expert judges, who generously gave their time to view all the award entries and make the difficult decisions to choose some very worthy winners. We are delighted to welcome you to the 2024 FIDIC Contract Users’ Awards, which will be presented at our special gala dinner event in London on 3 December 2024. This year is the sixth year of these prestigious awards, which recognise excellence in the use of FIDIC contract forms for project delivery, the promotion of FIDIC contracts, their use in the global construction sector and showcase examples of good practice through collaboration from across the world. The judging panel for the awards, chaired by former UK High Court judge Sir Vivian Ramsey, chose nine successful entries across a range of categories including Project of the Year, Client of the Year, Contractor of the Year, Trainer of the Year and Legal Firm of the Year. The nine successful entries will be presented with a winner or highly commended prize during this evening’s awards ceremony.

She acts as a trusted advisor and critical friend to CEOs, chairman and executives, non-executive directors and senior leadership teams. Sara has sector experience in communications/professional services/management consulting, healthcare, engineering, technology, construction, chemicals, water, environmental services, funeral services, media/publishing and education. Since 2021 she has operated as a communications advisor for FIDIC, Climate Action Group and other clients in the global infrastructure market and since 2011 has been non-executive chair of the Bourne Education Trust, one of the UK’s largest multi-academy educational organisations. Sara is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and an associate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Sara Lipscombe has worked in the infrastructure sector for the majority of her career, having served as an executive director for organisations including WS Atkins PLC, Groupe Bouygues, SAUR International and Costain Group PLC. She is a non-executive director and communications director experienced in leading international financial PR, corporate, ESG, internal, stakeholder and marketing communications, transformation and change programmes for world-leading, quoted companies, regulated industries, government departments and educational establishments.

GED Africa Route Client: GED AFrica Engineer: Rankin Engineering Consultants, LnP Beyond Legal Country: Congo and Zambia The client, GED Africa, a developer, located in Mauritius, undertook a development initiative which it conceptualised and structured as a 25-year build-operate-transfer project between the subsidiaries of GED Africa (GED Congo and GED Zambia) and the governments of Congo and Zambia under separate concession agreements. The GED Africa Route will help unlock agriculture potential through regional trade facilitation and improved access to international markets. Improved infrastructure will unlock regional potential in these two key sectors and pave the way to achieving socio-economic and climate targets aligned with the UN sustainable development goals.

Grand Egyptian Museum Client: Grand Egyptian Museum Authority Engineer: Hill International, EHAF JV Country: Egypt The GEM otherwise known as The Grand Egyptian Museum, through its breathtaking architectural design and layout, with its triangular shaped philosophy as well as the natural stone finishes of the building, captures the essence of the pyramids and the surrounding area. A commercial area in front of the grand staircase leads to the museum’s galleries artistically showcasing how the past and the present meet. The GEM project managed to harness all the clauses referenced in the FIDIC Pink Book and FIDIC White Book.

Project of the Year

CERN Country: Switzerland CERN is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory. Founded in 1954, it was one of Europe’s first joint ventures. It is the home of the world’s largest and most complex machine, the Large Hadron Collider, which is a high-energy particle accelerator. CERN considers that the long-standing use of FIDIC contracts is a key factor in its ability to successfully deliver the variety of infrastructure projects across its site. Through CERN’s experience gained in using FIDIC contracts, the organisation has acquired a robust understanding of how best to select and deploy the FIDIC suite with a developing group of practitioners CERN used both FIDIC White Book and Red Book, as well as the Design-Build-Operate Contract.

Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre Country: United Arab Emirates The Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre (ADPIC) has been working since 2022 to develop new contract forms for public works construction. Previously, capital project construction works used forms from 2006 based on FIDIC 1999. However, each government entity created its own set of Particular Conditions, leading to unbalanced obligations. To address these challenges, ADPIC aimed to create a new set of contract conditions. Over the past two years, ADPIC reviewed contracts and outcomes in its capital projects cycle, engaging stakeholders to secure ‘whole market buy-in’ on a balanced contract form using DAAB for dispute resolution. Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre used the FIDIC White Book, Red Book and Yellow Book.
